New Beginning: 2026 Halfway House Cohort Starts Strong in Balaka

The 2026 cohort of residents at the Balaka Halfway House has officially begun their journey and they are already off to a strong and promising start.
The Halfway House programme, run by Prison Fellowship Malawi in collaboration with Malawi Prison Service, provides a structured and supportive environment that bridges the gap between prison and full reintegration into society. This approach allows residents to gain practical skills, rebuild confidence, and prepare for independent living.
Since their arrival, the new cohort has been actively engaged in a range of technical and vocational training (TEVET) workshops, including:
– Tailoring
– Welding and fabrication
– Electrical installation
– Cosmetology
– Carpentry
These hands-on trainings are designed to equip residents with marketable skills and entrepreneurial capacity, enabling them to earn a living and reintegrate successfully into their communities.
Beyond technical skills, the programme also emphasizes personal development, discipline, and responsibility, helping residents transition from incarceration into productive and purposeful lives. Halfway houses play a critical role in this process by offering structured support, life skills training, and opportunities for reintegration, reducing the likelihood of reoffending.
As the 2026 cohort settles in, their commitment and enthusiasm reflect the transformative power of second chances. With continued guidance and support, these individuals are taking meaningful steps toward restoring their lives and contributing positively to society.
